Choosing the Right Pottery Kiln for Your Home Studio

The right pottery kiln depends on the space you have available and the size of the pieces you typically make.

For most home potters, an electric kiln between 40L and 70L provides plenty of capacity for mugs, bowls and small sculptures, while still fitting comfortably into a home studio, garage or shed.

If space is particularly limited, a smaller kiln such as the Phoenix 38 can be a great option.

All of our kilns (apart from the Phoenix 38) include kiln furniture and a controller. Kiln furniture is shelving that goes inside of the kiln to allow you to stack your pieces. A kiln furniture set usually consists of batts (shelves) and props (cylinders that are used to prop up the shelves).

Top loading kilns are usually the go-to choice for home potters, as they take up less space. Top-loading kilns also tend to be a little bit less expensive than front-loading kilns.

All of the options below are capable of firing high stoneware pieces, and can be plugged into a standard UK plug socket. Replacement elements are available from us for all kilns.

Benefits of a Home Kiln

With a kiln at home, not only can you save money in the long run, you also get the following benefits:

  • No worry of breaking fragile pieces in transit. One less thing to worry about!

  • Get your kilns firing whenever you want, without leaving the house. Lots of time saved by being able to nip into the garage rather than across town.

  • No mistakes caused by other people Your pottery/ceramic pieces are still not going to be perfect every time (if they are, tell us your secrets!!), but having your private home kiln makes it much easier to troubleshoot issues.

  • Freedom and ability to experiment Since you can now fire your kiln at home as many times as you want, you can experiment with different temperatures and schedules. You can try a small experiment before you risk it on your main work.

  • No waiting times: Fire whenever you want, as much as you want.
