A versatile buff stoneware with added tooth for confident handbuilding and sculptural work.
Premium Sanded Buff is a medium-textured body designed for potters who want a balance of workability and strength. Approximately 7 percent of BS mesh -30 sand is added to the recipe, giving the clay extra tooth while remaining pleasant to handle.
This body is especially well suited to handbuilding, sculptural forms and larger work where additional structure is helpful. Despite the added sand, it maintains good plasticity and can still be thrown by those who enjoy working with lightly textured clays.
The current Premium Buff recipe is a 2022 redevelopment of earlier buff bodies, reformulated following the unavailability of a key raw material. It incorporates a higher proportion of premium raw materials, including exclusive Coombe Fireclay sourced from the Birch Coppice clay mine in South Staffordshire. This iron-rich fireclay produces a subtle light fleck when fired at stoneware temperatures.
Firing range: 1100 to 1290C (Cone 02 to 11)
Indicative texture: 4 on a scale of 1 (very smooth) to 10 (very coarse)
Hardness: NGK 6 to 7 (measured using an industry-standard penetrometer)
Indicative total contraction: 9 percent at 1100C / 12 percent at 1200C*
Standard bag size: 12.5 kg
